What is this?
UK Company Map plots the registered office address of every live company on the Companies House register — around 5.6 million companies at 2.7 million unique addresses. Click any dot to see the full list of companies registered there, with status, incorporation date and nature of business, each linking to the official Companies House record.
Where do the financial figures come from?
Companies that have filed accounts also show headline figures — net assets, average employees, and cash, turnover and profit where the filing reports them — taken from the free Companies House accounts data product, which publishes the accounts themselves as tagged iXBRL. Figures come from each company's most recent filing, and the date they cover is shown alongside them.
About 85% of active companies old enough to have filed have figures. The rest are mostly newly incorporated — a company's first accounts aren't due until roughly 21 months after incorporation — or are overdue filers. How much detail appears depends on the size of the company: the smallest file micro-entity accounts, which are a balance sheet and an employee count with no profit and loss account at all, so turnover and profit only appear for larger businesses that have to report them.
What do the colours mean?
By default a dot's colour tracks how many companies are registered at the address, the same thing its size shows. Switching to Net assets recolours the map by the largest net assets figure filed at each address, while the dot keeps its size — so a big pale dot is a formation agent's office full of shell companies, and a small dark one is a single substantial business. Grey means nobody at that address has filed a net assets figure, which is usually because the companies there are too new.
Net-assets colouring only switches on once you are zoomed in far enough for each dot to be a single address. Zoomed out, a dot merges dozens of nearby addresses into one, and colouring those by their largest company would put a hundred-million-pound dot on a village whose own companies are all small — so below that zoom the map keeps colouring by company count, and says so.
Bear in mind that a registered office is only where official mail is served. Colouring by net assets will light up the accountants and company secretaries that act as registered office for large groups, not the places those groups actually trade.
Why do some addresses have thousands of companies?
The brightest dots on the map are usually the offices of company formation agents and registered-address services. A company's registered office doesn't have to be where it actually trades — it's just where official mail is served — so tens of thousands of companies can share a single street address. Some well-known hotspots have over 15,000 companies registered at one building. The map makes these clusters, and the geography of UK company registration generally, easy to explore.
How it works
The whole site is static — there is no server or database behind it. A monthly pipeline joins the free Companies House company data snapshot with postcode coordinates from the ONS Postcode Directory, dedupes the addresses, and packs the result into a PMTiles vector tileset plus a byte-range-addressable company index. Your browser fetches only the few kilobytes it needs for what's on screen.
Accuracy & limitations
Positions are postcode centroids (with a small scatter so addresses don't overlap), not exact building locations. Overseas registered offices are not mapped. Addresses are shown as filed: the same building can appear as separate dots when companies have filed it with different spellings. Data refreshes monthly from the official snapshot; company details link to Companies House for the authoritative, up-to-the-minute record.
